The hauntingly beautiful Tigaki wetland
Lying between the seaside villages of Tigaki and Marmari, only a 20-minute drive from Diamond Collection Hotels, the wetland of Tigaki offers a hauntingly beautiful sight to the visitors. The area functioned successfully as a salt production installation up until 1989. When the production stopped, nature took over, and the salt lake became over the years the home of a large diversity of flora and fauna. Since then, Tigaki wetland is being officially protected by the Ramsar Convention as well as Natura 2000 network for its unique natural landscape. Bird watching has become quite popular in Tigaki, with visitors coming to observe the migrating birds, some of them rare; pelicans, herons, and flamingos offer a magnificent spectacle along with other animal life, like the aquatic turtles and water snakes.
