A Guide to Kos Intriguing Museums

With the first human traces dating back to the prehistoric times, the island of Kos showcases a rich history. Kos flourished during the Byzantine times, while the Venetian occupation left its mark on the island's fine architecture. Kos is also famous as it is Hippocrates birthplace – the father of medicine. The plain tree that Hippocrates used to sit with his disciples stands until today, at the center of Kos Town.

Hundreds of findings from Hellenistic and Roman Times can be found inside the Archaeological Museum of Kos. The building that houses the exhibits has its own history, as it stands there from the Italian occupation. Besides the exceptional collection of ceramics and pottery, the museum's main attractions are the marble Roman statues, the charming mosaics and the busts.

Situated 40 kilometers away from the town of Kos, the Folklore Museum is located in the town of Kefalos. Inside the museum, you will find agricultural tools utilized throughout the centuries. There are also many traditional artifacts, embroideries and stunning woven tapestries and silks. Well preserved, all items offer a deep insight into the lives of people during various periods of time.

Antimachia is a small village where visitors can admire the traditional house of Antimachia. The old restored house is a perfect example of a typical 20th-century edifice. Inside the building, you will find "tavlaos" - or the living room as we call it today- the kitchen, the tools and the rooms where women used to work the loom and bake the bread.

It goes without saying that Hippocrates Cultural Center located in Mastihari, is dedicated to the father of medicine, Hippocrates. This private cultural center is an impressive replica of an ancient Greek settlement. The building is surrounded by an amazing area dotted with vineyards, herb garden and cedar trees mostly found in ancient Greece.

No matter what your plans are while visiting Kos, you can’t miss out on the island's cultural landmarks.
